Research from PDSA and YouGov found that 26% of UK adults have a dog, representing an estimated UK dog population of 9.6 million in total. That’s a lot of dog lovers and their four-legged friends.

To celebrate International Dog Day 2021, Perfect-Pet Books has taken a look at the most popular dog breeds in the UK and which ones make the best companions. These are the dogs that thrive in a human pack. Whatever activity you do, a companion dog is less interested in herding and guarding and more interested in sitting with you. They are exceptionally affectionate, eager to please, and very social, making them the perfect companion breed.

A companion dog will stay by your side whether you are working around the house, watching TV, or taking walks. Some will make ideal companions for the elderly, while others will work best in a household with a few children. Whatever your situation, there is a companion breed for you.

The Toy Group is where you’ll find many of the most popular pet dog breeds. Terriers, sporting dogs, and hunting dogs can also be good friends. You will find companion dogs with different energy levels, and of all shapes and sizes.
